A gag order against one of Trump’s biggest foes could score political points and help him and his co-defendants in the short term. Then, McAfee appeared to suggest a gag order may be necessary. “I don’t know a reason to have a gag order right now,” Parker told CNN. The former president already faces a gag order in his criminal hush money case that’s headed to trial later this month in New York. CNN —The Republican operative who accused American Conservative Union chairman Matt Schlapp of sexual assault last year received a significant financial settlement in exchange for dropping his lawsuit against Schlapp, multiple sources familiar with the case told CNN. The $480,000 settlement was paid to Carlton Huffman through an insurance policy, according to a source familiar with the details. The original lawsuit filed by Huffman against Schlapp asked for more than $9 million in damages. Huffman told CNN that Schlapp made unwanted sexual advances, including groping and fondling his groin without consent, on the ride back from two Atlanta-area bars on October 19, 2022. A former official on the Walker campaign told CNN he does not believe the settlement exonerates Schlapp.

The Senate voted 31-22 to pass Senate Bill 189, sending it on to the House for more debate. Also Tuesday, Burns' committee approved a state constitutional amendment that says only U.S. citizens can vote in Georgia elections. Supporters, including Raffensperger, claim the measure is needed to make sure no one ever changes the current Georgia law that bars noncitizens from voting. Some lawmakers hope new optical scanners can be purchased and used to count ballots without QR codes this year. All Democrats, even one who voted to ban QR codes in committee, voted against the Senate bill Tuesday.

The House passed a GOP-led resolution on Tuesday to censure Rep. Rashida Tlaib over comments critical of Israel and in support of Palestinians amid Israel’s war against Hamas. The vote was 234 to 188 with four Republicans voting against and 22 Democrats voting in support of the censure resolution. Both censure resolutions reference the chant. But those reports were contradicted by American intelligence, which subsequently concluded that the Israel Defense Forces were not responsible for the explosion. Greene’s resolution accuses Tlaib of “lying about Israel’s responsibility for the attack.”In a statement on the two censure resolutions, Tlaib said, “It’s a shame my colleagues are more focused on silencing me than they are on saving lives, as the death toll in Gaza surpasses 10,000.

CNN —Trump-era Justice Department official Jeffrey Clark cannot move his Georgia election subversion case from state to federal court, a judge ruled Friday. All defendants in the Georgia case – including Clark, Trump and Meadows – pleaded not guilty. The three fake electors – former Georgia GOP chair David Shafer, sitting Georgia state Sen. Shawn Still, and former Coffee County GOP chair Cathy Latham – have pleaded not guilty. Lawyers for the three fake electors clashed with Fulton County prosecutors at a recent hearing about where their case should be tried. Several struck cooperation deals with prosecutors last year, and Willis said in a recent filing that at least four uncharged fake electors would be witnesses at trial.

CNN —A federal judge on Friday rejected former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows’ bid to move his Georgia criminal case to federal court, a significant setback for Meadows and a troubling sign for former President Donald Trump. Meadows was the first of five defendants who already filed motions to move the case to federal court – and Trump is expected to do so, too. ‘Outside Meadows’ federal role’The indictment identifies eight overt acts Meadows allegedly took in furtherance of the scheme to overturn the 2020 election results. Meadows argued that these actions were part of his federal duties – and thus, the case should be moved to federal court – but Jones disagreed. independent of its conclusion” in the Meadows case, Jones wrote.

CNN —Former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and five other defendants charged in the election interference case in Fulton County pleaded not guilty Tuesday and waived their arraignments in new court filings. Jeffrey Clark, a former Justice Department official who is similarly seeking to move his case to federal court, also pleaded not guilty in a court filing. He also urged Georgia state lawmakers to appoint fake GOP electors to replace the legitimate slate of Democratic electors. Shafer has previously claimed that the fake electors scheme came at the direction of Trump and the Trump campaign. President Biden is headed to Philadelphia Thursday to tout his “Bidenomics” agenda, hoping once again to make early headway with voters over economic issues. And for now, Biden has a chance to tout his economic agenda and successes while his potential Republican presidential challengers are bogged down, either in a battle for second place or by the potential of another looming indictment. Doug Burgum’s campaign announced Wednesday that he had received contributions from more than 40,000 individual donors, meeting one threshold to qualify for the first GOP presidential primary debate. That could be a blow to both Republicans as they take on (or consider running against) primary candidates who have support from GOP leaders. Raking it in: Nevada Republican Sam Brown raised $400,000 in the first week of his Senate campaign, Politico reports.

It echoes 1,000 years of antisemitic conspiracy theories that Jews are responsible for, yet somehow immune to, plagues and disease – beliefs that led to actual Jews being murdered by angry mobs. No, of course, we’re in Washington, DC, where politics dictates how antisemitism is, or isn’t, tolerated by those with something to gain from it. Really, it was only a matter of time before RFK Jr. stumbled into overt antisemitism. Without exaggeration, many of my Jewish friends have remarked that this mainstreaming of antisemitism reminds them of 1930s Germany. There is no equivalence between a strident anti-Israel remark and the resurrection of age-old antisemitic conspiracy theories.

Kemp said it was "humbling" that his name has been floated as a GOP presidential candidate. Kemp in a recent interview with CBS-affiliate WRBL said that his priority was leading Georgia. "It's humbling that there are people out there that think I would make a good president. However, Kemp left some wiggle room in his comments, even as he previously said he wouldn't seek the White House in 2024. And I just think a Republican president will get the ox out of the ditch, if you will.

The roar of outrage from Republican leaders to that indictment restored Trump’s grip on the party after frustration over his role in the GOP’s disappointing 2022 midterm elections had loosened it. Repeating the pattern from other moments of maximum threat to Trump, the GOP response has been marked by a pronounced communications imbalance. (The poll was conducted after Trump’s indictment in Manhattan but before the recent federal charges.) At another point Trump insisted, “These criminals cannot be rewarded” – presumably by frightening Republican voters away from nominating him. Yet, Robinson believes, by echoing Trump’s claims of unfair treatment, the other candidates are encouraging Republican voters to accept his framing of the race.

Plainclothes detectives have also been asked to wear their uniforms, the Washington Post reported. The Post reported that plainclothes detectives have been ordered to wear uniforms in case they're deployed on Tuesday, too. According to The Post, officials have heightened security around the Miami federal courthouse ahead of Trump's arraignment. At 2024 presidential campaign events over the weekend, Trump called the indictment "ridiculous" and "baseless," the Associated Press reported. The Post reported that there are plans for pro-Trump rallies outside the Miami courthouse on Tuesday, one of which seems to be organized by the Proud Boys' local branch.

Georgia Republicans are holding their state party convention in early June. Former President Donald Trump and former Vice President Mike Pence are speaking on different days. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the embattled former president and the yet-to-declare former vice president have already locked down speaking slots for the two-day GOP convention, kicking off June 9. Ron DeSantis, who is hopscotching across Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina this week to build support in those early primary states, declined to comment on whether he would participate in the Georgia GOP meeting. Kemp, who won a second term in November 2022, is skipping the GOP convention altogether.
CNN —Lawyers representing David Shafer, the embattled chairman of the Georgia Republican Party, are arguing their client should not be charged with any crimes for his actions following the 2020 election because he was following advice provided by attorneys working for former President Donald Trump, according to a letter sent to Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis last week. Willis has indicated she is seriously weighing bringing racketeering and conspiracy charges in connection with Trump’s actions in the Peach State around the 2020 election. Willis had previously notified all 16 GOP fake electors in Georgia that they were targets in her investigation. Other Republicans who served as pro-Trump electors, including Shafer, could still face legal exposure in her investigation, according to people familiar with the matter. Investigators have at least three recordings of Trump pressuring Georgia officials, including a phone call that he made to the Georgia House speaker to push for a special legislative session to overturn Democrat Joe Biden’s 2020 victory in the state.

Countless scientific studies say that burning fossil fuels has played a major role in the warming climate. Donald Trump holds a wide lead over Ron DeSantis in a new Georgia GOP presidential poll. Trump led DeSantis 51%-30% with all candidates in the race and led 51%-41% in a one-on-one matchup. Ron DeSantis of Florida in a recent 2024 presidential poll of Georgia Republican voters. The results show the ex-president's continued dominance over the party despite his high-profile endorsement misfires against GOP Gov. In a poll conducted by the School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Georgia, Trump led DeSantis 51%-30%, with 4% backing former Gov.
Kemp told the outlet that Trump "didn't do a good enough job of telling people what he had done." Kemp, who was inaugurated to a second term this week, has been floated as a potential 2024 presidential contender. Brian Kemp of Georgia for not helping him overturn now-President Joe Biden's victory in the Southern swing state in the 2020 election. "President Trump and his reelection didn't do a good enough job of telling people what he had done and what he wanted to do in a second term," the governor told the outlet. Trump, who lost to Biden in the 2020 presidential election, has continued to allege that voter fraud was the culprit behind his ejection from the White House.
A GOP Congressman in Georgia may have broken the state's voting law by casting ballots in the wrong county. Rep. Drew Ferguson voted in the county where he used to live during the 2022 election cycle. Ferguson has been an advocate against voter fraud since the 2020 election and backed Trump's election lies. "Congressman Ferguson resolved the issue, and proceeded to vote in Troup County for the primary, general, and run-off elections." "Congressman Ferguson is currently in the process of transitioning his residency to his new home in Pike County," the spokesman added.
Walker was "shocked" he didn't 100% of the vote in his home county last month, per The Daily Beast. The Republican carried Johnson County 74%-26% over Warnock, but was still taken aback by the result. While Walker received 2,484 votes to Warnock's 869 votes in Johnson County in November, Kemp earned 2,504 votes compared to Abrams' 867 votes. On Tuesday, Warnock defeated Walker in the runoff 51.4%-48.6%, earning a full six-year term in the Senate and denying Republicans a much-desired win. And Warnock gained ground in Johnson County in the runoff compared to the November election, winning 967 votes (29%) to Walker's 2,419 votes (71%).
